Boomer writers Randy Fitzgerald and Dan Neman won top writing awards at the Virginia Press Association’s news conference and annual meeting March 20 in Roanoke, while artist Kerry Talbott won a top illustrating award and art director Scott Harris won three design awards.
Fitzgerald was honored as the state’s top magazine columnist, based on columns about a burglary during his family’s Outer Banks vacation, his purchase of a low-dollar but too-high-status Lexus automobile, and former University of Richmond president Bruce Heilman.
Neman was named the state’s top magazine feature writer for three pieces on moviemaking: movies in the American mindset, today’s shoddy filmmaking and celebrities he has interviewed.
Talbott won the illustrations award for his drawing of Neman sitting in a movie theater with John Travolta, Joaquin Phoenix and Tom Cruise on the screen.
Harris won second-place design awards for lifestyle or entertainment awards (based on three layouts) and for design and presentation (based on three full issues), as well as a third-place award for specialty pages or sections (based on three sports layouts).
Other Boomer award winners include photographer Michael Waine, second place in personality or portrait photo; writer Paula Neely, third place for lifestyle or home writing; and photographer Ash Daniel, third place for picture story or essay.
