It’s worth the drive: From April 15 to May 30, multiple venues in Hampton Roads will come alive with more than 50 performances in the Virginia Arts Festival’s 14th season. England’s acclaimed Birmingham Royal Ballet performing Swan Lake, the world premiere of a work by Tony Award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan, sidesplitting comedy by the Reduced Shakespeare Company and the inspirational voices of the African Children’s Choir—all are highlights of this year’s festival.
Norfolk’s Scope Arena will be the site of the Virginia International Tattoo (April 30 to May 2) and will showcase more than 850 performers from around the world in an awe-inspiring presentation of music and might. A tradition dating to the 17th century, a tattoo is ceremonial performances of military music by massed bands. With the only other tattoo performances in Nova Scotia and Edinburgh, Scotland, Virginia’s Tattoo has been designated an “Internationally Known Event” by the American Bus Association, a leading tourism organization.
