Taxes On My Mind PDF Print E-mail

Americans seem to have differing views about who should pay taxes in this country. In a simplistic way, rich people think poor people should pay more of their share in taxes; poor people feel rich people can afford to pay more taxes and therefore should do so. You can conclude that what both sides have in common is they both want other people to pay more taxes so they can pay less.

I believe that all capable Americans who want to share in the benefits of taxes should pay taxes.  Not equal in dollars spent, but  a flat tax of equal percentage or as near to that as possible. Notice I said capable Americans. For a variety of reasons some people won’t be capable of being self-sufficient.

But some people choose to become more capable than others, and we need to encourage and offer legitimate incentives for people to succeed. America should remain a land of choices, as much as possible. Some will choose to drop out of high school who are capable of more education and career choices over a long life. Their lives will be hard and it will cost a lot more for society to care for them throughout their lives. Others will work hard in school and in work. I believe all people should have incentive to enjoy a better lifestyle by applying themselves more. In the process, productivity with individuals leads to productivity as a society.

In our future we might not be the manufacturing economy we once were, but if more people choose to contribute instead of dropping out, our country will invariably be of value to the world economy in the future. We will be using our collective talents in new fields — maybe energy, telecommunications, maybe the medicines and sciences or in more ways than you can classify.

I think there is a correlation between taxes and incentives in our society. We need to keep people motivated to go out and earn a living for themselves and grow throughout their lives and entrepreneurs to benefit from the risks taken and encouraged to stay in business and provide employment.

I think all capable Americans should have skin in the game and pay taxes. Myself included.
