A perfect — and modern — hairstyle is do-able
Cutting Edge
By Susie Galvez
Once you reach a certain age, you probably feel that you have tried every possible hairstyle imaginable — long, short, light, dark, full, flat, pulled back, pulled up, upswept, twisted, teased, bunned, back-combed, blown-out, barretted, headbanded, blunted, colored, frosted, highlighted, lowlighted and everything in between. All in search of the perfect hairdo for you.
Nearly every woman dreams of the perfect hairstyle, one that flatters the shape of your face, is easy to style, fits your lifestyle and makes you feel beautiful. Even if you are caught in a sudden downpour or windstorm, just a few simple adjustments and — voila! — your hairstyle would be once again perfect.
Think New
An impossible dream? “Not at all!” says Derrick Diggs, owner of Layers Hair Salon. But as he points out, hair, just like our skin and our bodies, changes as we age.
“Even a great hairstyle that seemed perfect to you five years ago could actually be adding five years to your look today,” he says.
Not only does a 5-year-old style look dated, but your hair texture, color depth, consistency, shine factor and volume are changing as well, according to hair experts.
YY Salon master stylist Matt Whitlock says, “Hair becomes finer or more coarse, drier, grays, color fades, could become curlier or lay limp — overall is less manageable.”
What’s a boomer gal to do?
Consider the Bob and Shag
The experts agree that two styles that work beautifully across the board are a modern bob and a dimensional shag.
“The reason that these styles continue to be so popular is how great the style looks, the ease in home maintenance between visits and how adaptable the style is. Both can vary from short, sassy crops to longer-flowing layers — flattering all facial shapes and lifestyles,” Diggs says.
In addition to creating movement and lift around the face, the bob and the shag give definition to the chin and elongate the neck. If you want to hide forehead wrinkles, add some bangs. To lessen laugh lines around the eyes, feather the hair toward the temples.
Diggs adds: “Just say no to perms — forever! Nothing screams ‘old’ like permed hair. Today’s volume is created by layering and texturizing the hair. So much more current and modern.”
Color Dimensionally
As for hair color, Whitlock advises that “You should wear the hair; it should not wear you. Great hair color is designed to enhance and accentuate your look and show off your beauty.”
From all-over color to highlights, the word for color is dimensional. Gone are the days of just one all-over color or single-colored highlight. Instead, several tones are used to create warmth and depth to the hair, making the color richer and more youthful-looking.
Now is the perfect time to schedule a hairstyle consultation with a professional. The experts look at your hair texture, review your lifestyle and show you how to maintain your hairstyle beautifully between visits. Usually there is no cost, but your takeaway of having fabulous hair will be priceless!
